Bentley Priory

A Case Study of Bentley Priory

We want to share a new case study about the work we have carried out at Bentley Priory Nature Reserve, located next to Bentley Priory in Stanmore, London.

We will detail the work we undertook to bring this fantastic reserve back to its best and explain how we can help with your next project too.

What is Bentley Priory?

Bentley Priory Nature Reserve is a 55-hectare nature reserve located next to Bentley Priory in Stanmore, Greater London.

Managed by the Harrow Nature Conservation Forum, this reserve features a variety of neutral grassland, scrub, wetland, streams and a lake—providing a home for a diverse range of plants and animals.

Visitors can enjoy walking trails, birdwatching and other outdoor activities while exploring the beauty of this unique site.

It’s also home to the famous Master Oak Tree. The trunk of the Master Oak is 9m (just under 40 feet) in circumference and is estimated to have been around when King Henry VIII was on the throne.

Bentley Priory Nature Reserve is one of London’s most important conservation sites. Its unique history and natural beauty make it a valuable resource.

What Did T&T Earthmatters Do?

T&T Earthmatters began by cutting back scrub encroaching onto the meadow areas of the reserve. Scrub is vegetation made of low, woody plants found between the grass and forest.

It also provides a suitable environment for many flowers and birds to nest.

However—if left to grow—it will eventually become woodland. So by cutting it back, some parts are left as woodland and others meadow. As a result: increasing the reserve’s biodiversity and maximising the different types of plants, insects and birds that inhabit the area.

We decided to do the work during winter before nesting season to avoid disturbing the wildlife. Using a tracked chipper, we could reduce the amount of vegetation getting cut while ensuring the meadow’s surface isn’t damaged.

Projects like this one preserve and enhance its biodiversity—ensuring its wildlife can continue to thrive.
